Youth Services Worker

Responsibilities

• Perform responsible duties related to the care, security, welfare, and custody of youth at the Juvenile Detention Center
• Provide direct care to youth and maintain the security and safety of the facility
• Facilitate, organize, and supervise behavioral, educational, and recreational group activities
• Counsel youth on situational problems and instruct them on facility rules and regulations
• Monitor participant progress and assist in the implementation of individual care and placement plans
• Conduct periodic bedroom checks, perform searches, and detect/confiscate contraband
• Maintain accurate verbal and written reports regarding all occurrences during shifts
• Assist with medication dispensing and minor medical duties
• Provide backup for intake, transportation, and control center staff

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, plus 3 years of relevant experience
• OR an Associate's degree in a related field (Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice) plus 1 year of relevant experience
• Valid State of Iowa driver's license
• Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 75 lbs
• Ability to participate in the physical restraint of hostile, aggressive, and combative youth
• Ability to work various shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays in a 24/7 operation

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in an institutional setting dealing with the welfare of dependent or delinquent youth
• Knowledge of the Iowa Juvenile Code and licensing/accreditation standards
• Certification in Safe Crisis Management or equivalent
