VP of Communications & External Affairs

Responsibilities

• Develop and steward Fathom's overarching narrative and message architecture across legislation, coalition-building, and research.
• Write and edit a steady stream of external content, including policy one-pagers, op-eds, blog posts, and the Architecture of Governance Substack.
• Build and maintain relationships with reporters and editors across technology, policy, and national political press to secure earned media.
• Lead the communications function by hiring and mentoring staff and managing the communications budget.
• Manage external vendors and agencies, including PR firms, designers, and polling partners.
• Monitor the AI policy news cycle to lead rapid response efforts for hearings and legislative developments.
• Craft talking points, briefing materials, and message frameworks for leadership and coalition members.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in communications, media engagement, storytelling, or PR, ideally within the public sector or technology.
• Demonstrated fluency in AI and/or technology policy, or a proven ability to master complex technical subject matter quickly.
• Exceptional writing, editing, and narrative skills with the ability to tailor messaging for diverse audiences.
• Proven experience managing teams, budgets, and external agencies.
• Strong media relations expertise and a track record of directing executive thought leadership.
• Political savvy with a deep understanding of the intersection between politics and policy.
