Vice President, Legal Affairs and General Counsel

Responsibilities

• Serve as the chief legal advisor to the university, its president, board of trustees, and university officers.
• Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the Office of the General Counsel.
• Manage the litigation docket and oversee all litigation files on behalf of the university, including managing outside counsel.
• Prepare, review, and advise on legal documents, contracts, policies, and procedures.
• Advise on property acquisitions, leases, labor relations, personnel matters, and intellectual property including patents and trademarks.
• Assist with compliance reviews by governmental and higher education regulatory agencies.
• Manage and monitor the cost of legal services to ensure alignment with budgeted amounts.
• Act as a liaison with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and other state government entities.
• Develop and implement long-term strategic goals and organizational policies for the legal division.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
• Active license to practice law in the State of Ohio (or ability to obtain one within six months of hire).
• At least ten years of legal practice experience.
• At least five years of supervisory experience.
• Authorization to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive litigation experience.
• Specialized knowledge of higher education law.
• Experience with non-discrimination regulations and labor law.
