Requirements

Veterinary technician/technologist diploma or related degree, 1 year laboratory animal experience preferred, Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs, No animal-related allergies, Valid Provincial Class G driver's license preferred

About the role

Responsibilities

  • Perform specialized husbandry for animal experiments, including managing transgenic, gene knockout, and immunodeficient mouse colonies
  • Establish rodent breeding colonies and maintain detailed records
  • Provide technical support including identification, DNA sampling, anesthesia, injections, and blood sampling
  • Maintain specialized containment equipment such as biological safety cabinets and ventilated racks
  • Train research personnel in technical and husbandry-related areas to ensure high standards of animal care
  • Implement appropriate housing strategies for specialized colonies and address problem breeding issues

Requirements

  • Graduate of a veterinary technician/technologist diploma program or a related university degree in biological, animal, or veterinary sciences
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written)
  • Ability to work independently and take direction
  • Physically capable of performing required duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs
  • No history of animal-related allergies
  • Willingness to participate in the University Health and Safety immunization program

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience in a laboratory animal-related field
  • Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) through the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science
  • Valid Provincial Class "G" driver's license
