About the role
Responsibilities
- Provide high-level technical clinical care for critically ill small animals within a 24/7 intensive care unit and emergency service environment.
- Perform technical procedures including medication administration, intravenous catheter placement, venipuncture, cystocentesis, and abdominal/thoracic taps.
- Monitor anesthetized patients and maintain accurate medical records of vital signs, treatments, and procedures.
- Maintain ICU readiness, including equipment quality control, inventory management, and stocking.
- Support emergency services by aiding in the assessment and stabilization of incoming patients.
- Handle Class II drugs according to strict protocols, including dosage verification and record maintenance.
- Participate in nursing rounds and, for higher-level roles, instruct veterinary students and interns.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree or Associate's degree in veterinary technology, or CVT/equivalent certification.
- Alternative: 3 to 7 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties (depending on the specific technician level).
- Experience in intensive care or emergency veterinary settings.
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, and bending for prolonged periods.
- Willingness to work a variety of shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or equivalent certification.
- Previous experience in a teaching hospital environment.
