About the role

Responsibilities

  • Drive operations for the U.S. State Policy and Partnerships team, including planning, communications, and meeting cadences
  • Support execution of state and local policy strategy across all 50 states
  • Advance state-level priorities related to AI policy, safety, workforce, and infrastructure
  • Track legislative, regulatory, and political developments to anticipate risks and opportunities
  • Shepherd policy analysis and briefing materials through internal review processes
  • Translate complex technical and legal issues into accessible materials for policymakers
  • Prepare leaders for engagements with governors, legislators, and agency leaders
  • Represent OpenAI in external meetings, conferences, and coalitions
  • Identify opportunities for public-private partnerships and community engagement

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of experience in public policy, government affairs, political campaigns, or public sector consulting
  • Deep understanding of state and local government structures
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders
  • Strong writing and communication skills for translating technical issues
  • Ability to navigate sensitive political and stakeholder dynamics with judgment
  • Comfort working cross-functionally across legal, technical, and product teams
  • Willingness to travel for meetings and state-level engagements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AI policy, online safety, or economic development
  • Experience working with governors, attorneys general, or national state associations (NGA, NCSL, etc.)
  • Experience managing consultants, coalitions, or multi-state campaigns
  • Experience building internal systems for growing policy or government affairs teams
  • Prior experience in a fast-moving technology company or advocacy organization
