Tutor - Academic Resource Center

Responsibilities

• Provide individual and small-group tutoring to help students improve academic achievement, study skills, and content mastery.
• Act as an educational mentor by guiding, coaching, and providing feedback rather than simply teaching content or completing homework.
• Support active learning and critical thinking through problem-posing and collaborative study.
• Uphold academic integrity policies and the National Tutoring Association’s Code of Ethics.
• Maintain accurate records and complete periodic evaluations of tutoring sessions.
• Report student concerns regarding absenteeism, academic integrity, or emotional stress to the Director.

Requirements

• Grade of B or better in the specific subject area being tutored.
• Recommendation from at least one faculty member or academic dean in the content area.
• Strong oral communication skills and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
• Availability to work at least 4 hours per week during regular center hours.
• Availability for mandatory weekly tutor training, including Mentor Groups and development workshops.
• Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for teaching and tutoring.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous tutoring or teaching experience.
• Current LIU Brooklyn student status.
