About the role
Responsibilities
- Provide scientific and technical leadership for a large-scale project developing a wearable, multimodal maternal–fetal monitoring system.
- Build and maintain working relationships with clinical collaborators, including maternal-fetal medicine specialists and neonatologists.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact between CMU lead labs and external academic and industry partners.
- Provide high-level technical oversight to ensure the coherence of system architecture and project timelines across all partners.
- Identify technical risks and gaps early, recommending prioritization or scope adjustments to the PI.
- Support technical content for regulatory planning, including FDA Q-submissions and milestone reviews.
- Mentor graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and research staff on experimental design and data interpretation.
- Contribute to scientific output, including manuscripts, abstracts, and grant proposals.
Requirements
- PhD in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, biophysics, neuroscience, applied physics, or a related field.
- Multiple years of post-PhD research experience in a relevant laboratory or R&D setting.
- Technical depth in sensing modalities such as diffuse optics, EEG/EMG/ECG, ultrasound, or photoacoustics.
- Proven track record of substantive scientific output through peer-reviewed publications or conference presentations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical details for clinical partners.
- Successful completion of a background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience coordinating multi-institutional or international research collaborations.
- Familiarity with clinical research, IRB processes, and regulated medical device development (e.g., 510(k), PMA, De Novo).
- Experience interfacing with federal sponsors such as NIH, DARPA, or ARPA-H on milestone-driven programs.
