Technical Director/Scenic Carpenter

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and oversee all scenic and technical aspects of theatrical productions across The Hartt School.
• Interpret design drawings and renderings to determine construction methods, materials, and labor needs.
• Construct, install, and maintain scenery using advanced woodworking and metalworking techniques.
• Manage scenic and technical budgets, build calendars, and load-in schedules.
• Supervise and mentor student workers, ensuring safe and professional theatrical practices.
• Maintain and safeguard technical assets, including stage machinery, rigging systems, and shop equipment.
• Enforce all safety protocols and OSHA regulations within the scene shop and performance venues.

Requirements

• Advanced knowledge of scenic construction and theatrical carpentry.
• Proficiency with theatrical shop tools, machinery, woodworking, and metalworking.
• Ability to read, interpret, and generate technical drawings.
• Experience with CAD software (Vectorworks or AutoCAD preferred).
• Knowledge of rigging systems and stage machinery.
• Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
• Ability to work in a high-noise environment and perform heavy lifting (51 lbs or more).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
• Basic working knowledge of lighting and sound systems.
• Experience working within a diverse academic or performing arts environment.
