About the role

Responsibilities

  • Oversee technical operations for the Black Box Theatre, Preus-Brandt Forum Theatre, and other performance venues.
  • Transform scenic, lighting, prop, sound, and media designs into technical communications that align with space and budget.
  • Plan and supervise technical production activities and personnel, ensuring a safe working environment in shops and venues.
  • Develop load-in schedules to ensure all technical systems are functional by the first technical rehearsal.
  • Maintain updated technical drawings, designer information packets, and space protocols for all university venues.
  • Manage production areas including scenery, paint, lighting, sound, and properties.
  • Support and mentor student designers and work with undergraduate student crews.
  • Design 1-2 shows per semester in an area of interest, such as Scenic or Lighting Design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Three years of theatre experience working in multiple theatre spaces within a professional or academic setting.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or SketchUp).
  • Knowledge of QLab and digital/online performance tools.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA regulations for theater and building safety, including rigging and power distribution.
  • Ability to lift and move scenery exceeding 70lbs and work at heights.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MFA in Theatrical Technical Direction.
