About the role
Responsibilities
- Manage the operational and technical needs of a small teaching farm, including animal care and facility maintenance.
- Serve as an assistant and delegate to the Farm Veterinarian, following established protocols for animal health and safety.
- Monitor livestock for illness or injury and assist with medical care tasks, including estrus synchronization and artificial insemination.
- Maintain accurate records, including animal census, identification databases, feed/bedding inventory, and instructional cadaver inventory.
- Oversee farm security, including opening/closing procedures and monitoring visitors.
- Lead student workers by developing monthly weekend schedules and weekly task lists.
- Support student activities, labs, and courses by managing logistics, supervision, and post-lab clean-up.
- Maintain farm equipment, vehicles, and infrastructure such as fences, gates, and stalls.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 1 year of experience caring for cattle or small ruminants.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs and perform rigorous outdoor labor.
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and handle exposure to sun, rain, snow, and livestock elements.
- Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by breeding or teaching schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Agricultural Technology, or a related field.
- 3 years of verifiable equivalent work experience.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
