Surgical Assistant

Responsibilities

• Provide care to patients undergoing surgical procedures under provider supervision in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
• Perform surgical hand scrubs, gowning, and gloving according to established policy.
• Function as first or second assist on assigned cases and fulfill surgical tech roles as assigned.
• Maintain sterile technique, check instruments for proper working order, and assist with sponge, sharps, and instrument counts.
• Assist with OR case preparation, including procuring equipment based on surgeon preference lists and establishing the sterile field.
• Assist with patient positioning, skin clipping, prepping, foley catheterization, and draping.
• Under direct observation, perform tasks such as inserting secondary trocars, using power equipment, irrigating wound sites, and suturing subcutaneous tissues and skin.
• Communicate effectively with the circulating nurse regarding instrument malfunctions or compromises to sterility.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of a Surgical Assistant Program.
• Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) certification from NBSTSA, NSAA, or NCCSA.
• Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine.

Preferred Qualifications

• BLS Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
• One year of healthcare experience.
