Responsibilities

• Handle, receive, and process operational and special event samples potentially containing biological threat agents
• Perform microbiological and molecular science work, including DNA extraction and real-time PCR to identify pathogenic agents
• Prepare reagents and samples following Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
• Maintain chain-of-custody (CoC) and perform data entry using computerized systems
• Decontaminate workspaces, including biological safety cabinets, hoods, and equipment
• Perform routine equipment calibration, cleaning, and maintenance
• Collect and analyze internal laboratory swabs for QA/QC and contamination monitoring
• Manage proper disposal of bio-hazardous waste and maintain inventory of supplies
• Adhere to QA/QC requirements in accordance with laboratory quality management systems
• Remain available to report to the lab 24/7/365 in case of emergencies, including holidays and weekends

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in microbiology, molecular biology, or a related biological science field
• At least one year of prior laboratory bench experience outside of an academic environment
• Hands-on experience with PCR and aseptic techniques
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DHS Suitability security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) environment
• Previous approval by the Public Health Laboratory or BioWatch Laboratory Lead to perform similar work
