About the Company

Staten Island Legal Services (SILS) is part of Legal Services NYC (LSNYC), the largest provider of civil legal services in the country. SILS fights poverty and seeks racial, social, and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers by providing high-quality representation to address pressing legal needs such as housing, income, and economic security.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise advocates in obtaining government benefits including CityFHEPS, FHEPS, SCRIE/DRIE, SNAP, and Social Security
  • Ensure tenants facing eviction secure necessary government assistance to prevent default judgments
  • Carry a small caseload and provide supervision and coverage in housing court
  • Collaborate with the Unit Director on client intake, administrative agency representation (including DHCR), and case strategy
  • Support litigation planning for eviction defense and affirmative impact litigation
  • Assist with administrative and grant-related responsibilities

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Admitted to practice in New York
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant litigation and advocacy experience, specifically in housing, public benefits, or rent subsidies
  • Experience in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to advancing equity for low-income communities of color
  • Excellent analytical, written, and communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills for providing consistent supervision in a high-volume practice
  • Strong time management and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong ties to or understanding of Staten Island’s low-income communities
  • Experience working directly with clients in crisis
