Substation Control Standards Engineer/Sr. Designer

Responsibilities

• Design advanced microprocessor-based protective relay systems and control schemes using AutoCAD Electrical and Vault Professional.
• Specify materials for substation design standards, including stock and shop-fabricated items.
• Provide guidance on Southern Company Design Standards, procedures, and processes.
• Assist Control Standards Ad-hoc committees with the design of new standards and updates to existing ones.
• Manage control standard maintenance requests using JIRA ticketing software.
• Coordinate with manufacturers, vendors, and internal committee members to resolve equipment and material issues.
• Support substation design, construction, field services, project management, and maintenance teams.
• Participate in P and C Standards Working Group Meetings and support storm restoration efforts.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or technology with 5+ years of relevant design experience.
• Associate degree with 8+ years of relevant design experience.
• Or, no degree with 10+ years of relevant design or utility experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
• Experience using Autodesk Suite, specifically AutoCAD Electrical.
• Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with substation protective relay testing, control scheme testing, and commissioning.
• Understanding of substation protection and control scheme operation.
• Ability to create Substation Control Design drawings from a single line wiring diagram.
• Experience in Transmission or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility.
• Experience with document management and estimating systems such as TEAMS, STOMP, MAXIMO, or SCST Vault.
