Substation Control Design Engineer/Designer

Responsibilities

• Design protective relay and control schemes in AutoCAD utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems for greenfield and brownfield projects.
• Specify and procure materials for substation design packages, including stock, shop-fabricated, and non-stock items.
• Prepare and transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications through the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, manufacturers, and vendors to resolve equipment and material issues.
• Provide technical support to Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management, and Substation Maintenance.
• Perform site visits for pre-engineering, pre-construction, and post-job evaluation meetings, including some overnight travel.
• Support Southern Company’s design criteria, standardization efforts, and storm restoration activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology.
• Alternatively, an Associate degree with 5+ years of relevant design experience.
• Or, 8+ years of relevant design or utility experience without a degree.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience using Autodesk Suite, specifically AutoCAD Electrical.
• Understanding of substation protection and control scheme operation.
• Experience in substation protective relay testing, control scheme testing, and commissioning.
• Ability to create Substation Control Design drawings from a single line wiring diagram.
• Experience in Transmission or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility.
• Familiarity with document management and estimating systems such as TEAMS, STOMP, MAXIMO, or SCST Vault.
• Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory and utility electric grid operations.
