About the role

Responsibilities

  • Support classroom teachers with the individualized learning, behavioral, and developmental needs of various students
  • Help implement strategies in alignment with formal student support and/or behavior plans
  • Assist teachers in preparing instructional materials and maintaining an orderly classroom environment
  • Provide support for children with diverse learning needs in small group settings
  • Actively supervise students in and out of the classroom to ensure safety and emotional needs are met
  • Assist in supporting children’s toileting routines and transitions
  • Support positive social-emotional skill development through modeling and reinforcement
  • Monitor student progress and collaborate with teaching teams to adjust strategies
  • Support families in understanding their child’s needs using a strengths-based approach
  • Maintain documentation and ensure compliance with local and federal regulations
  • Participate in team meetings, staff development, and MTSS meetings

Requirements

  • Age 18 with high school diploma or GED
  • Four or more years of professional experience as an aide, assistant, paraprofessional, or lead teacher for children ages 3-5
  • Experience implementing IEPs or other student support and behavior plans
  • Ability to pass background checks and tuberculosis screenings required by the state of Hawaii
  • Skill in collaborating with families, community, and school staff
  • Ability to independently supervise and care for young children safely
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 40 lbs
  • Familiarity with Hawaii and Hawaiian culture

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of special education experience (infancy through third grade)
  • Associate’s degree in early childhood education or relevant post-secondary coursework
  • Experience working with families in low-income communities
  • Proficiency or fluency in Spanish or Hawaiian
  • Knowledge of Montessori pedagogy
  • Experience in culturally responsive and trauma-informed teaching practices
