Steerman

Responsibilities

• Operates rear steering axles of large or articulated vehicles to ensure trailers stay aligned
• Communicates with front driver for coordinated vehicle control during transit
• Navigates tight turns, narrow roads, and complex routes
• Monitors trailer position and adjusts rear axles as needed
• Follows commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety regulations and protocols
• Acts as a chase pilot to provide a safety buffer for oversized loads
• Uses warning signs, lights, and flags to manage traffic flow
• Reports on traffic conditions and road hazards via two-way radio
• Assists with routing, navigation support, and minor roadside repairs

Requirements

• CDL Class A license
• Minimum 5 years of driving experience
• Minimum 3 years of oversize heavy haul experience
• Experience with axle weight distribution
• High mechanical aptitude for assembly of dual lane trailers and suspension girders
• Clean MVR
• Load securement capabilities
• Double and Triples endorsements
• Ability to travel, including weekends and overnight stays
• Must pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with dual lane trailers, 9-axles, and hydraulics
• Ability to run heavy equipment
• Experience with Port of Entries
• HAZMAT endorsement
