Staff Writer

Responsibilities

• Report and write deeply reported features, essays, commentary, and analysis
• Pitch original story ideas and respond to editorial assignments
• Collaborate with editors, newsletter, social media, video, and other digital teams
• Work closely with copy editors, fact-checkers, legal counsel, and production staff to meet rigorous standards and deadlines
• Maintain high ethical standards in all reporting and writing

• Exceptional writing track record across various journalistic forms
• Demonstrated experience with in-depth reporting, narrative writing, and ideas-driven essays
• Ability to write with originality, clarity, precision, and rigor
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work independently
• Familiarity with The New Yorker’s tone, values, and editorial sensibility
• Willingness to travel for reporting and respond to news events as necessary
