Staff Software Engineer, Backend

Responsibilities

• Own backend architecture across multiple services and team boundaries, from design through implementation
• Write production code daily and set the standard for quality, reliability, and engineering practice
• Partner with engineering leads and product managers to scope large initiatives and define technical requirements
• Improve scalability, performance, and reliability as the platform grows
• Identify and clear technical debt across multiple teams
• Build security and observability into systems from the ground up
• Mentor engineers across all levels and shape technical culture through reviews and coaching
• Participate in technical interviews to help scale the engineering team

Requirements

• 8+ years of backend engineering experience, including experience as a Staff, Principal, or technical lead
• Proven track record of designing and delivering systems that span multiple services or teams
• Deep expertise in APIs, data modeling, distributed systems, and event-driven architecture
• Proficiency in technologies such as Java, Node.js, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or AWS
• Experience scaling platforms operationally and managing production incidents
• Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs clearly to engineers, product, and business leaders

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working at a consumer, social, or marketplace company
