About the role

Responsibilities

  • Design, model, assemble, analyze, and test optical and photonic components and systems
  • Conduct R&D into physical optics, geometric optics, optical materials, and metrology
  • Identify and procure components including sensors, lasers, fiber-optics, and opto-mechanics
  • Assemble and manage the assembly of prototypes while adhering to laboratory safety protocols
  • Document system designs, generate technical reports, and file invention disclosures
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts across various business units from research to manufacturing
  • Deliver technical presentations to team members, customers, and at professional conferences

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics, optical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field with 2 years of industrial experience, OR a Master's degree with 5 years of relevant industrial experience
  • Strong working knowledge of optics and the optical properties of materials
  • Proficiency in modeling optical systems using Zemax, CodeV, FRED, or comparable systems
  • Hands-on experimental skills in building free-space optical and photonic systems
  • Ability to perform complex data analysis and measurement of optical components
  • Effective oral and written communication skills for various presentation settings
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% domestically or internationally

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with optical metrology systems such as laser confocal microscopes and optical interferometers
  • Working knowledge of light-matter interactions, radiometry, and photometry
  • Experience automating measurement systems using Labview, C#, MATLAB, or Python
  • Skills in mechanical design and assembly of prototypes
  • Experience in numerical analysis techniques including beam propagation methods and multi-physics modeling
