Staff Engineer, Engineering Productivity & AI Quality

About the Company

Harper is an AI-native commercial insurance company based in San Francisco. We are rebuilding the trillion-dollar commercial insurance industry from scratch, using AI to handle core workflows so that humans can focus on high-level judgment.

Responsibilities

• Own CI/CD quality gates across critical services
• Build integration test harnesses anchored to real failure modes
• Develop the agent harness substrate, including sandbox lifecycle and tool routing
• Manage repo-level agent instructions and context hygiene
• Implement automated PR preflight systems
• Enforce architecture rules through custom lints and structural tests
• Build eval framework infrastructure for pre-merge gating and production monitoring
• Track engineering metrics such as rework rate, escaped defects, and AI-generated PR quality

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years at Senior+ level
• Proven track record building developer productivity, platform, CI/CD, or internal tooling
• Ability to write and review production code at a Staff level
• Experience with production AI/ML systems (agent harnesses, eval frameworks, or prompt engineering)
• Strong opinions on maintainability, architecture, and developer experience
• Proficiency in writing code with AI daily
• Excellent written communication skills for RFCs and architecture documentation

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with eval-framework infrastructure
• Experience building developer platforms at AI-native companies
• Expertise in custom lint or structural-test authoring at scale
• Experience with agent harnesses, sandboxing, and execution environments
