Staff Database Engineer

Responsibilities

• Design and own database architecture for critical infrastructure, including PostgreSQL-backed internal platforms and Slurm/NetBox data systems.
• Define standard patterns for high availability, replication, failover, backup/restore, and capacity planning.
• Operate and improve production environments across PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Percona.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues involving query latency, lock contention, replication lag, and storage I/O bottlenecks.
• Build deep database observability using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and low-level Linux profiling tools.
• Automate database provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management via Ansible, CI/CD, or internal tooling.
• Act as the technical lead for major database incidents and mentor L4/L5 engineers.

Requirements

• 8+ years of production database engineering, administration, or architecture experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL in production environments.
• Strong hands-on experience with MySQL, Percona, or equivalent relational database platforms.
• Proven experience designing and operating highly available database systems with replication and disaster recovery.
• Deep SQL performance tuning skills, including execution plan analysis and schema optimization.
• Strong Linux systems knowledge and experience with production incident response.
• Ability to define technical standards and influence architecture across cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with SlurmDBD, Slurm accounting databases, or HPC/AI infrastructure workloads.
• Experience with NetBox or other infrastructure source-of-truth platforms.
• Proficiency with PostgreSQL HA tooling and advanced MySQL/Percona architectures (e.g., ProxySQL).
• Experience with observability platforms like PMM, Splunk, or Grafana.
• Experience using low-level Linux diagnostic tools such as eBPF/BCC, perf, or strace.
• Experience with database automation using Terraform or Ansible.
