Staff Data Engineer

Responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end data flywheel converting raw edge telemetry and video into labeled training data and evaluation sets
• Build and own layered dataset pipelines to standardize raw source data into curated datasets
• Manage the labels and semantic annotation lifecycle, including versioning and quality checks
• Maintain frozen, versioned validation and benchmark datasets for model comparison
• Implement dataset versioning and schema evolution strategies
• Develop read/write libraries and integrations for PyTorch/Lightning and Spark
• Enforce machine-enforced data governance, including classification, scrubbing, and lineage
• Provide technical mentorship and set data-engineering standards for the team

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building large-scale data pipelines and lakehouse systems
• Experience building data pipelines specifically for model training and evaluation
• Strong expertise in medallion-style architectures and modern table formats like Iceberg, Delta, or Parquet
• Experience handling large-scale multimodal data including video, image, and sensor telemetry
• Proficiency in Python and hands-on experience with Spark and PyTorch/Lightning dataloaders
• Practical experience enforcing data governance, access control, and lineage
• Proven track record of technical leadership
• Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with streaming or near-real-time ingestion from edge/IoT sources (Kafka, Lambda, EMR)
• Knowledge of append-without-rewrite and hash-indexed dataset techniques
• Experience with Generative-AI data work, including fine-tuning and evaluation for LLMs/VLMs
• Experience exposing datasets to AI agents through MCP-style query interfaces
• Familiarity with computer-vision/video annotation tooling like Encord or Labelbox
