About the role
Responsibilities
- Manage litigation, advocacy, and community outreach for the LGBTQ+ & HIV Advocacy Project
- Represent clients in Brooklyn housing court, NYS Supreme Court, federal courts, and administrative fora
- Conduct client intake at regular outreach clinics, including after-hours sessions
- Establish relationships with community-based organizations and governmental entities
- Perform home and hospital visits to meet with clients
- File affirmative litigation challenging systemic discrimination
Requirements
- License to practice law in New York
- Minimum of four years of legal experience
- Substantial knowledge of HASA benefits
- Experience litigating cases under the New York City Human Rights Law
- Substantial civil litigation experience as lead or sole counsel
- Experience working with BIPOC transgender, queer, nonbinary, and HIV/AIDS communities
- Ability to provide trauma-informed, client-centered legal services
- Willingness to conduct outreach in low-income neighborhoods
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience litigating in federal court
- Experience with NYS Human Rights Laws and federal discrimination laws (e.g., ADA)
- Proficiency in case management software
- Fluency in languages commonly spoken by client communities
