Staff Attorney

Responsibilities

• Manage litigation, advocacy, and community outreach for the LGBTQ+ & HIV Advocacy Project
• Represent clients in Brooklyn housing court, NYS Supreme Court, federal courts, and administrative fora
• Conduct client intake at regular outreach clinics, including after-hours sessions
• Establish relationships with community-based organizations and governmental entities
• Perform home and hospital visits to meet with clients
• File affirmative litigation challenging systemic discrimination

Requirements

• License to practice law in New York
• Minimum of four years of legal experience
• Substantial knowledge of HASA benefits
• Experience litigating cases under the New York City Human Rights Law
• Substantial civil litigation experience as lead or sole counsel
• Experience working with BIPOC transgender, queer, nonbinary, and HIV/AIDS communities
• Ability to provide trauma-informed, client-centered legal services
• Willingness to conduct outreach in low-income neighborhoods

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience litigating in federal court
• Experience with NYS Human Rights Laws and federal discrimination laws (e.g., ADA)
• Proficiency in case management software
• Fluency in languages commonly spoken by client communities
