About the role
Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary resource for students regarding onboarding, curriculum, success, and completion using a guided pathways model.
- Provide proactive and developmental academic advising to new students and an assigned caseload.
- Guide students in developing plans of study that meet degree requirements and recommend appropriate course loads.
- Facilitate student problem-solving, decision-making, planning, and goal setting.
- Connect advisees to appropriate campus resources based on individual needs.
- Support faculty by providing information and resources to assist with student persistence and retention.
- Teach students how to track academic progress, interpret policies, and utilize available institutional tools.
- Document all student interactions, including appointment notes, emails, and phone conversations, using advising technology.
- Build strong working relationships with academic departments, faculty, and staff to support student success.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, counseling, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of experience in academic advising, admissions, or other higher education functional areas.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn new software.
- Strong communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with underrepresented populations and respect for diverse backgrounds.
- Understanding of the community college mission and setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in college student personnel, social work, education, higher education administration, or a related field.
