Sr. Staff Engineer, Precision Engineering

Responsibilities

• Develop robust precision machine systems to provide competitive advantage and enable new product lines for Corning's Life Sciences segment.
• Design and analyze first and next-generation products, machines, fixturing, and components with a focus on design robustness.
• Interface with R&D, Engineering, and Manufacturing teams to drive innovation and production capability.
• Solve complex mechanical engineering problems and develop a deep understanding of process requirements to influence equipment performance.
• Integrate commercially available technologies and leverage external machine builders and system integrators.
• Utilize internal lab facilities to develop proof-of-concept prototypes.
• Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including controls, process, optical, and glass scientists.
• Travel 5% - 25% (primarily domestic) for installation, debugging, start-up, and customer/supplier interaction.

Requirements

• B.S. in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Precision Engineering (MS preferred).
• 15+ years of professional engineering experience.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of direct experience in precision engineering.
• Proven experience designing and building precision motion systems.
• Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks or Inventor.
• Strong understanding of precision engineering principles and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to travel significantly to support business needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency with metrology tools and techniques (e.g., CMM, laser interferometer).
• Strong knowledge of precision machining techniques and materials.
• Experience researching prior art and documenting Intellectual Property.
• Excellent presentation and communication skills.
