About the role

Responsibilities

  • Assist special education teachers in providing physical and instructional support to students with disabilities in self-contained or autistic classroom settings.
  • Implement classroom programs including self-help, behavior management, and instruction.
  • Assist students with physical disabilities, including transferring to/from wheelchairs, lifting, and positioning.
  • Support students with personal care needs such as feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
  • Manage student behavior and perform crisis intervention, including restraining disruptive or dangerous physical behavior as needed.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises.
  • Supervise students throughout the school day, including lunchroom, bus duty, and playground.
  • Assist in preparing instructional materials, maintaining classroom displays, and keeping administrative records.
  • Maintain a safe, neat, and orderly classroom environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Associate's degree, Bachelor's degree, or a minimum of 48 college credit hours.
  • Valid Texas Educational Aide Certificate.
  • Two years of experience working with children.
  • Ability to assist with physical disabilities and provide personal care.
  • Ability to manage student behavior and perform crisis intervention.
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Ability to perform frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and heavy lifting of students.
