About the role

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a Teacher Mentor to follow the Resident Framework Practices and Gradual Release Plan
  • Assist in the delivery of instruction as guided by the classroom teacher
  • Support students with physical disabilities, including transferring to/from wheelchairs and positioning
  • Assist students with personal care needs, such as feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene
  • Help manage student behavior and perform crisis intervention, including physical restraint if necessary
  • Work with individuals or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises
  • Supervise students throughout the school day, including lunchroom, bus duty, and playground
  • Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials, maintaining classroom displays, and keeping administrative records
  • Maintain a safe, neat, and orderly classroom environment

Requirements

  • Enrolled at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) as a Junior or Senior in the Educator Preparation Program (EPP)
  • Minimum of 48 completed college credit hours
  • Valid Texas Educational Aide Certificate
  • Ability to assist with physical needs and heavy lifting of students
  • Ability to manage student behavior and maintain emotional control under stress
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience working with children
  • Proficiency with general office equipment and personal computers
  • Experience using wheelchair lifts, ramps, and audio-visual equipment
