About the role

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of the Safety Management System (SMS), including policy, procedures, and documentation
  • Maintain alignment with ICAO Doc 9859 framework and regulatory obligations from UN ECE R157 and UL 4600
  • Establish and maintain the Safety Performance Monitoring & Measurement (SPMM) program, including SPIs and SPTs
  • Collect, analyze, and report safety performance data to surface trends and systemic issues
  • Track safety occurrence reporting and coordinate incident investigations and near-miss reports
  • Plan and coordinate internal SMS audits and manage corrective/preventive actions (CAPAs)
  • Champion a non-punitive safety culture and design SMS training programs
  • Partner with Risk Management and Safety Case leads to integrate SMS into program milestones

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 5+ years of experience in safety management or safety engineering in a regulated industry
  • 3+ years of direct experience owning or contributing to a formal Safety Management System (SMS) program
  • Experience with SMS documentation, SPMM design, and internal audit coordination
  • Familiarity with UN ECE R157 / WP.29 and ICAO Doc 9859 structures
  • Strong analytical skills for defining and interpreting safety performance indicators

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering or safety discipline
  • SMS Lead or Safety Management System certification (e.g., ISASI, IATA SMS, SMS Pro)
  • Experience in autonomous vehicles, ADAS, advanced aviation, or robotics
  • Familiarity with UL 4600 SMS and safety assurance requirements
  • Experience interfacing with NHTSA, state DMVs, or other AV regulatory bodies
  • Proficiency in Power BI, Excel, SQL, or AI/automation tools for safety data analysis
