Shop Technician

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction to students, faculty, and staff on the safe use of power tools and equipment, including saws, drills, grinders, welders, and hand tools.
• Maintain health and safety standards in compliance with University and government (OSHA) regulations.
• Operate and provide instruction on digital fabrication tools such as CNC routers, laser cutters, 3D printers, and 3D scanners.
• Maintain, repair, and implement upgrades for shop equipment as necessary.
• Manage inventory for materials, equipment, machine parts, consumables, and hand tools.
• Collaborate with the Director of Fabrication Shops to improve shop practices and curriculum integration.

Requirements

• College degree in a related field (e.g., Industrial Design, Furniture Design, Sculpture, Studio Art, or Technical Direction) or equivalent relevant work experience.
• Working knowledge of safety practices and strict compliance with OSHA regulations.
• Proficiency in fabrication techniques involving wood, metal, or plastics.
• Experience with digital fabrication tools (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing, etc.).
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs and stand for long periods.
• Availability to work on-premises with a schedule that includes evening and weekend shifts during the academic year.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience teaching or mentoring in a shop-related field.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino/RhinoCam, Autodesk Suite (AutoCAD, Fusion360), Solidworks, or Inventor.
