Shipping Legal Counsel

Responsibilities

• Provide specialist legal advice and commercial support to Shell Trading and Supply's Shipping, Maritime, and freight trading businesses.
• Draft, review, and negotiate complex contracts, agreements, and transactions related to shipping and chartering.
• Collaborate with business and functional teams to assess and manage legal risks associated with trading operations.
• Advise on both contentious and non-contentious matters, including charterparties, bills of lading, and cargo claims.
• Support strategic projects such as fleet renewals, decarbonisation, and shipping technology initiatives.
• Operate effectively within a fast-paced, highly visible trading environment while adapting to evolving industry regulations.

Requirements

• Qualified solicitor or barrister in a common law jurisdiction.
• Advanced experience in supporting shipping and maritime commercial activities.
• Deep understanding of charterparties, bills of lading, cargo claims, demurrage, and vessel management agreements.
• Experience with international civil or common law contracts and knowledge of physical commodity trading.
• Strong drafting, negotiating, and analytical problem-solving skills.
• Digital fluency and AI-readiness, with the ability to use digital tools to enhance legal support efficiency.
• Ability to work with high levels of autonomy and provide strategic advice to senior stakeholders.
