About the role

Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate care and support to individuals experiencing homelessness at the Nanaimo New Hope Centre.
  • Monitor facility access, maintain logbooks, and complete incident reports to ensure a safe environment.
  • De-escalate conflicts and mediate disputes among clients to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
  • Perform security checks, including bed checks and property inspections, in accordance with shelter policies.
  • Manage client medication and distribute essential supplies such as bedding and hygiene items.
  • Collaborate with case managers, kitchen staff, and external agencies like first responders to ensure holistic care.
  • Maintain accurate client data, including intake information, financial records, and occupancy statistics.

Requirements

  • High School Graduation or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience in mental health or addictions, including frontline social service work.
  • Clear TB Skin Test.
  • Criminal record clearance through the BC Criminal Records Review Program.
  • Knowledge of available community resources in Nanaimo.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment and handle demanding circumstances.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or Mental Health & Addictions.
  • Valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Valid WHMIS certificate.
