Responsibilities

• Design and build core services for Metropolis Web Services (MTWS), including IAM, notifications, and message processing
• Build and maintain service mesh infrastructure for secure and observable microservices communication
• Create developer tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and platform automation
• Make critical technical decisions regarding service boundaries, API design, and data consistency
• Architect systems for high throughput and low latency to support global scale
• Establish monitoring, alerting, and reliability practices to ensure 99.99% uptime
• Drive architectural discussions and mentor other engineers

Requirements

• 8+ years of backend software engineering experience focused on distributed systems and platform infrastructure
• Expert-level Java proficiency including JVM performance and concurrency
• Production experience with microservices, Kubernetes, and AWS
• Strong systems thinking and ability to design high-availability distributed systems
• Expertise in observability (metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting)
• Knowledge of relational databases, event streaming (Kafka, SQS), and caching strategies
• Experience with AI-powered development tools like Claude Code or GitHub Copilot
• Excellent technical communication and documentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Computer Science or Engineering
• Experience with Scala and security compliance (authentication, authorization, secrets management)
• Experience scaling systems in high-growth environments
• Open source contributions or technical blog writing
• Performance optimization experience using profiling and benchmarking
