About the role

Responsibilities

  • Advise on vehicle emissions, fuel economy, and on-board diagnostics regulatory compliance, including EPA, CAFE, and CARB regulations.
  • Provide legal guidance on facilities and operations environmental compliance, including permitting, hazardous materials, and chemical content.
  • Advise on vehicle safety, connectivity, and autonomous vehicle regulatory schemes.
  • Support internal product quality investigations and assist with the implementation of recalls and field actions.
  • Represent the company during government inquiries and investigations, ensuring robust and transparent responses to regulators.
  • Collaborate with technical affairs teams and industry associations to influence policy and rulemaking positions.
  • Negotiate contract provisions related to regulatory compliance and provide preventative training to diverse internal client groups.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of legal experience, including autonomous responsibility in a relevant practice area.
  • JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active membership in a state bar or eligibility for TN Bar admission/TN In-House Counsel registration.
  • Expertise in environmental, product safety, or autonomous vehicle law.
  • Proficiency in legal research and MS Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Eligibility for U.S. government authorizations required for access to export-controlled technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant experience in a law firm or within a Federal or State regulatory agency.
  • Prior experience serving as in-house counsel.
  • Familiarity with NHTSA and HAZMAT regulatory schemes.
