Senior Program Scientist, AI and Advanced Computing Institute

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and people management for the AI and Advanced Computing Institute
• Support the design and execution of the Institute's strategic and scientific direction
• Co-design multi-year research agendas and identify high-impact areas for philanthropic investment
• Provide technical advice to existing programs and assist in the development of new research initiatives
• Manage a team of 3-5 program scientists and visiting scientists
• Act as a technical expert and conduit for the AI community to identify emerging trends and opportunities
• Represent Schmidt Sciences at industry and academic conferences

Requirements

• PhD in Artificial Intelligence or a closely related field
• 10+ years of experience in artificial intelligence across academic and industry settings
• Deep expertise in modern machine learning, including deep learning, generative models, and reinforcement learning
• Proven experience leading teams and managing technical staff
• Demonstrated track record of scientific accomplishments, such as peer-reviewed publications or patents
• Ability to travel internationally on a regular basis

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with ML engineering tools (Python, PyTorch, JAX) and building prototypes
• Expertise in mechanistic interpretability, multi-agent systems, or AI-accelerated simulation
• Familiarity with applying AI to scientific disciplines like biology, chemistry, or physics
• Experience designing grantmaking or funding programs within philanthropy or government
