Senior/Principal R&D Mechanical Engineer

Responsibilities

• Use high-performance computing (HPC) platforms and massively-parallel finite-element software to simulate nonlinear structural responses.
• Research advanced topics in nonlinear mechanics, including materials mechanics, fracture, and failure.
• Develop new numerical algorithms to solve nonlinear boundary value problems and integrate them into finite element software.
• Investigate reduced-order modeling strategies to enable efficient simulations of large-scale engineering models.
• Collaborate with experimental engineers to develop test plans for validating numerical model predictions.
• Build a robust research portfolio through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline and five years of directly relevant experience.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance (requires U.S. citizenship).
• Expertise in nonlinear structural mechanics, dynamics, and vibrations.
• Proficiency in numerical methods and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with uncertainty quantification and model order reduction methods.
• Strong computer programming and code development skills.
• Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization within the NNSA complex.
• Knowledge of experimental techniques for vibration testing and modal analysis.
