About the role
Responsibilities
- Provide senior technical leadership for the mechanical discipline within the UK water/wastewater treatment design team
- Act as mechanical discipline lead or senior technical authority on complex treatment projects
- Set and maintain mechanical design standards, checking requirements, and design risk processes
- Lead and assure complex mechanical deliverables, equipment strategies, and supplier packages
- Drive integrated coordination across Process, EICA, civil/structural, and MEP teams
- Lead senior client engagement, technical workshops, and design reviews
- Embed modern delivery approaches including digital design, BIM/3D coordination, and automation
- Support project directors with technical risk, scope, resourcing, and budget management
- Build and develop the mechanical sub-team through recruitment and mentoring
- Support business planning, work winning, and bid strategy
Requirements
- BEng/MEng in Mechanical Engineering
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (e.g., IMechE)
- 10–12+ years of relevant mechanical engineering design experience
- Background in water, wastewater, biosolids/bioresources, or oil & gas
- Proven track record leading mechanical design on complex multidisciplinary projects
- Deep expertise in mechanical treatment systems including pumps, pipework, and hydraulics
- Understanding of UK regulated water sector, asset standards, and CDM 2015
- Experience in people development, mentoring, or line management
- Strong client and stakeholder management skills
- Strong digital mindset with experience in BIM/MEP coordination or hydraulic analysis
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a mechanical discipline lead or technical director within consultancy or water companies
- Strong UK water sector client network
- Experience in digital treatment design, energy/carbon reduction, or modular solutions
- Experience leading mechanical technical governance or design standards
