Senior Merchant Underwriter

Responsibilities

• Evaluate merchant applications for legal compliance, card scheme rules, and operational risk appetite
• Perform credit reviews to ensure financial stability and chargeback liability coverage
• Conduct refresher reviews of the existing merchant portfolio, including licenses and financial statements
• Investigate chargeback spikes, ACH returns, and other risk indicators
• Drive process improvement and tooling projects to scale the underwriting program
• Lead initiatives to update internal processes in response to regulatory or scheme changes
• Determine risk mitigation conditions such as reserves and transaction limits
• Partner cross-functionally with Compliance, Product, Engineering, and Operations

Requirements

• 4+ years in fintech, payments, banking, or financial services underwriting
• Understanding of payment processing, merchant acquiring, and transaction risk
• Familiarity with high regulatory risk models (crypto, remittance, real money gaming)
• Proven track record meeting SLAs and performance expectations
• Strong analytical skills and evidence-based decision making
• Proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets for data modeling and trend analysis

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with transaction monitoring and case management platforms
• SQL and business intelligence tools (Tableau, Looker)
• Background in high-growth payment companies
• Interest in cryptocurrency or blockchain analytics (Chainalysis, Merkle, Elliptic, TRM Labs)
• Bachelor's degree
