About the role
Responsibilities
- Direct the application of existing principles and guide the development of new ideas for complex mechanical assemblies and specialized tooling for large-format robotic 3D printing equipment
- Perform detailed engineering analyses including structural, thermal, and kinematic using FEA/CFD and hand calculations
- Generate 3D CAD models, detailed 2D drawings per ASME Y14.5 standards, and accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Lead cross-functional design reviews incorporating feedback from industrial design, manufacturing, and software teams
- Drive selection and qualification of COTS components and ensure design for manufacturability (DFM)
- Collaborate with Prototype Technicians and Manufacturing teams to troubleshoot assembly issues
- Develop and execute verification and validation plans (V&V)
- Identify risks and drive mitigation strategies using tools like FMEA
- Provide hands-on support for field deployment and root cause analysis of mechanical failures
- Mentor junior engineers and manage engineering documentation within PDM/PLM systems
Requirements
- BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering or a similar relevant discipline
- 8+ years of experience in hands-on mechanical design and product development
- Experience with robotics, automation, heavy equipment, or large machinery
- Ability to lift 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to work in an office and engineering shop/lab environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise in designing drive trains, gearboxes, linear motion, and fluid handling systems
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks and PDM/PLM systems (e.g., Windchill, Duro)
- Experience with structural FEA and thermal CFD modeling (e.g., Ansys)
- Strong knowledge of GD&T
- Experience with material selection and fabrication methods like welding, CNC machining, and 3D printing
- Familiarity with industrial sensors, controls, and electrical/pneumatic integration
- Experience designing hardware for harsh outdoor environments
