About the role

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and lead novel research in applied machine learning and artificial intelligence, specifically focusing on AI/ML algorithm vulnerabilities.
  • Develop practical mitigations and defenses to secure AI systems against adversarial attacks.
  • Lead interdisciplinary teams to transition research results into prototype operational capabilities for government customers.
  • Identify and investigate emerging AI and AI-adjacent technologies.
  • Publish impactful original research and technical artifacts in the field of secure AI.
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop research strategies and influence the national research agenda.
  • Mentor and teach junior team members to improve the technical capabilities of the division.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Machine Learning, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline with 10 years of experience; OR MS in the same fields with 8 years of experience; OR PhD with 5 years of experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active Department of War security clearance.
  • Willingness to work onsite at an SEI facility 5 days per week.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time to various locations, including Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., and sponsor sites.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of machine learning and a track record of applying scientific methods to solve complex problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in adversarial machine learning.
  • Proficiency in writing funding proposals or pitching new research projects.
  • Experience leading research projects in novel areas with limited existing literature.
