About the role
Responsibilities
- Provide support to litigation attorneys, including research, document retrieval, and service of process
- Perform electronic court filings for state and federal district and appellate courts
- Screen and review incoming and outgoing court documents to ensure compliance with court rules and procedures
- Review court filings and enter calendar deadlines into centralized docketing software (e.g., CourtAlert)
- Track critical dates and communicate information to attorneys, paralegals, and staff
- Travel to courts and administrative agencies to process filings and retrieve decisions as necessary
- Search cases using specialized software and internet resources
- Assist with administrative projects and provide general back-up support
Requirements
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills for interacting with lawyers and court staff
- High level of organization and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to plan, organize, and complete multiple related activities under tight deadlines
- Understanding of court docketing and calendaring procedures
- Familiarity with court filings and general rules of court for processing pleadings
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a Managing Attorney or Clerk’s Office
- Experience working in a large law firm
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and rules-based calendaring software (e.g., CourtAlert, CompuLaw, MA3000)
- Experience with federal, state, and local electronic filing systems (e.g., NYSCEF, NexGen, PACER)
- Knowledge of court rules and procedures for Washington D.C. state and federal courts
