About the role

Responsibilities

  • Determine technical requirements for fabrication projects and translate research needs into manufacturable solutions
  • Design, modify, and fabricate custom machine parts and specialized laboratory apparatus
  • Create and review technical drawing sets, CAD models, and CAM programs/tool paths
  • Manage and troubleshoot automated workcells and robotic systems
  • Implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and quality within the machine shop
  • Coordinate routine maintenance for manual machines, CNC equipment, and robotic systems
  • Provide safety training and ensure strict adherence to shop safety standards and regulatory compliance

Requirements

  • College Diploma (2 years) or an equivalent combination of relevant experience
  • 8+ years of related experience, including at least 5 years in a fabrication shop environment
  • Advanced manual and CNC machining skills (lathes, mills, drills, grinders, and saws)
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software for creating technical drawings and tool paths
  • Experience with robotic systems, automated workcells, and basic robot programming
  • Strong understanding of fabrication methods, material selection, and machining tolerances
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and research specifications
  • Knowledge of machine shop safety standards and procedures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an academic, research, or prototype development environment
  • Familiarity with multi-axis CNC machining and advanced manufacturing techniques
  • Experience integrating robotic systems into production workflows
  • Knowledge of tooling design, fixturing, and workholding solutions
  • Certification or training in machining, robotics, or health & safety (e.g., WHMIS, lockout/tagout)
