About the role
Responsibilities
- Establish strategic objectives for PeerJ and F1000 that align with organizational goals and open access positioning
- Drive innovation in open access publishing models to expand market reach and impact
- Optimize business models, including lifetime membership and article processing charges, to maximize revenue and author satisfaction
- Lead and develop a team of editorial staff, ensuring clear objectives and empowered decision-making
- Design annual workforce plans to support global operations and talent retention
- Monitor market intelligence, emerging trends in open research, and competitor activity
- Foster relationships with the scientific research community, including authors, reviewers, and institutional partners
- Collaborate with internal expert teams to drive continuous business growth and operational excellence
Requirements
- Demonstrable experience in academic publishing with increasing levels of responsibility
- At least 3 years of experience in a leadership role
- Deep understanding of the open access publishing landscape and innovative publishing models
- Proven track record of executing strategic plans that drive revenue growth and market expansion
- Strong financial acumen with experience in P&L management or budget oversight
- Excellent analytical thinking and ability to translate market data into actionable strategies
- Strong leadership capabilities and experience managing high-performing teams
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, hybrid environment (commutable to London Blackfriars)
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of open peer review, open data, and transparent publishing practices
- Established network within the scientific research community
- Understanding of emerging technologies in scholarly publishing, such as AI and machine learning
- Experience working with international, distributed teams
