About the role
About the Company
Cowboy Space Corp. is building the infrastructure to power and connect the orbital economy. Our satellites operate in Low Earth Orbit to collect sunlight and enable a new class of capabilities—from powering on-orbit compute, to transmitting energy via infrared lasers (space-to-earth and space-to-space), powering on-orbit compute to delivering secure, high-bandwidth optical data.
Responsibilities
- Own radiation effects and reliability across spacecraft electrical systems
- Define radiation and reliability requirements for components and systems
- Plan and execute radiation test campaigns (heavy ion, proton, gamma/TID)
- Characterize and analyze Single Event Effects (SEE), Total Ionizing Dose (TID), and displacement damage
- Develop avionics reliability strategies including redundancy and FDIR
- Design and implement mitigation techniques like ECC, watchdogs, and shielding
- Perform reliability analyses such as FMEA/FMECA, FTA, and WCCA
- Establish and maintain approved parts lists (APL)
- Model radiation environments for LEO missions
- Partner cross-functionally with avionics, hardware, and software teams
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
- 4+ years of experience in radiation effects, avionics reliability, or high-reliability electronics
- Hands-on experience with radiation testing (SEE, TID)
- Experience with reliability engineering methods (FMEA/FMECA, FTA, derating, WCCA)
- Strong understanding of electronic components (FPGAs, ASICs, power systems)
- Ability to translate test results into design improvements
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or Physics
- Experience designing or qualifying spaceflight hardware
- Deep expertise in Single Event Effects (SEU, SEL, SET)
- Familiarity with radiation analysis tools (SPENVIS, OMERE, NOVICE)
- Experience with rad-hard or rad-tolerant design
