About the role
Responsibilities
- Develop data-driven approaches to disclosure control and safe outputs review to support the scaling of the Trusted Research Environment (TRE).
- Build algorithms and automated tools to classify outputs, detect disclosive content, and identify patterns of risk.
- Contribute to de-identification and re-identification risk assessments across datasets and access models.
- Develop approaches for safe AI, including managing privacy risks associated with trained models.
- Explore synthetic data generation and evaluate the trade-offs between privacy, fidelity, and utility.
- Collaborate with Information Security to develop data-driven security controls, threat detection, and cyber risk quantification.
- Build prototypes and production-quality code in collaboration with engineering teams.
Requirements
- Significant experience applying data science, machine learning, or statistical modelling to complex real-world datasets.
- Strong applied statistical expertise, including the ability to quantify risk and uncertainty.
- Strong Python skills and experience writing maintainable, production-quality code.
- Experience working with sensitive, confidential, or regulated data.
- Knowledge of privacy-preserving machine learning or privacy-enhancing technologies (e.g., differential privacy, federated learning).
- Understanding of common privacy attacks against data and models, such as membership inference or model inversion.
- Ability to translate complex governance or security problems into practical technical requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with health, biomedical, or genomic research data.
- Experience developing models that support human decision-making with an emphasis on explainability and auditability.
- Background in anomaly detection, behavioral analytics, or detection engineering.
- Familiarity with UK data protection and health data access expectations.
- Experience with MLOps, cloud platforms, or containerization.
