Senior Counsel, Commercial

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal advice and real-time support to commercial business teams, including trading and commercial transactions.
• Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements such as supply, sales, transportation, storage, and trading-related contracts.
• Advise on legal and regulatory considerations impacting commercial operations, including risk allocation and compliance.
• Partner with commercial leadership to structure transactions that align with company strategy while mitigating legal and financial risk.
• Identify, assess, and manage legal risk across commercial activities to ensure alignment with internal policies and applicable laws.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with finance, tax, and compliance teams to support integrated business solutions.
• Manage outside counsel to ensure high-quality and cost-effective legal support.

Requirements

• Juris Doctorate (JD) degree.
• Active license to practice law in a U.S. state (must obtain/maintain Ohio or applicable state bar membership).
• Minimum of ten years of licensed legal experience.
• Minimum of five years of legal experience supporting trading or trade floor operations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Relevant experience from the downstream energy sector in marketing or logistics.
• Strong business acumen with the ability to align legal advice to commercial objectives.
• Proven ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
• Exceptional negotiation and contract drafting capabilities.
