About the role
Responsibilities
- Handle non-tort claims against the City of New York, including complex legal and factual situations
- Conduct full investigations of assigned claims by reviewing agency records and databases
- Analyze liability and damages to prepare objective claim evaluations
- Make recommendations regarding the settlement or disallowance of assigned claims
- Prepare detailed written settlement recommendations
- Manage special education claims, including those involving administrative appeals
- Maintain accurate claim files, investigative materials, and communications
- Communicate professionally with City agencies, attorneys, and pro se claimants
Requirements
- Must be a current City of New York employee serving in a permanent Civil Service title of Claims Specialist
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; OR
- Associate degree and two years of full-time experience investigating/settling personal injury or property damage claims; OR
- High school diploma and four years of full-time experience investigating/settling personal injury or property damage claims
