About the role
Responsibilities
- Define and execute electrochemical characterization of commercial product cells, including capacity, DCIR/HPPC, rate capability, OCV/SOC mapping, and IC/DV analysis
- Own cycle life and calendar life test programs across various temperature and SOC conditions
- Design and execute self-discharge characterization at the cell level
- Manage third-party test engagements for thermal runaway, heat generation, and abuse testing
- Build and qualify in-house test and data-acquisition fixtures, including thermal chambers and custom DAQ
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate battery cycler hardware
- Define cell critical-to-quality (CTQ) metrics in partnership with cross-functional teams
- Lead the transition from verification to validation using statistically rigorous test campaigns
- Author and maintain test plans, SOPs, and validation packages
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians on lab discipline and data hygiene
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Physics
- 5+ years of experience in cell, battery, or electrochemical device test and validation
- Experience in formal engineering organizations with stage-gated product development
- Deep expertise in electrochemical characterization methods and instrumentation
- Direct experience operating and troubleshooting battery cyclers (e.g., Arbin, Maccor, BioLogic, Neware, Digatron)
- Experience managing third-party abuse and thermal testing engagements
- Track record of building in-house test fixtures and DAQ systems using LabVIEW or Python
- Strong statistical background including DOE, ANOVA, regression, and reliability analysis
- Excellent technical writing and presentation skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with sodium-ion, lithium-ion, or other advanced battery chemistries
- Knowledge of battery safety standards (e.g., UN 38.3, UL 1973, UL 9540A)
- Familiarity with calorimetry techniques and heat-generation modeling
- Proficiency in Python, R, JMP, or Minitab for statistical inference
- Experience with Jira or Smartsheet for project management
- Six Sigma or ASQ CRE/CQE certification
