Senior Backend Engineer

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of sharing and permissions features across the Canva product
• Propose innovative solutions to future-proof product decision platforms
• Write design documents and run design meetings to shape improvements
• Advocate for best practices in service performance, resilience, and adaptability
• Design and implement intricate aspects of the system to solve complex technical challenges
• Guide major projects through task breakdown and architectural diagrams
• Provide mentorship and guidance to other engineers for their professional development
• Orchestrate cross-team initiatives to improve reliability, velocity, and security

Requirements

• Extensive experience developing distributed web applications
• Deep understanding of Java
• Proven track record of executing complex architectural changes
• Mastery of computer science fundamentals including concurrency, data structures, and distributed systems
• Strong grasp of resiliency techniques like load balancing, throttling, and circuit breaking
• Hands-on experience with large distributed cloud environments (AWS preferred)
• Familiarity with cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes and Terraform
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with large-scale distributed asset management systems
